虛 用
Hán văn:
天 地 不 仁, 以 萬 物 為 芻 狗. 聖 人 不 仁, 以 百 姓 為 芻 狗. 天 地 之 間, 其 猶 橐 籥 乎. 虛而 不 屈, 動 而 愈 出. 多 聞 數 窮, 不 如 守 中.

1. Thiên địa bất nhân, dĩ vạn vật vi sô cẩu.
2. Thánh nhân bất nhân, dĩ bách tính vi sô cẩu.
3. Thiên địa chi gian, kỳ do thác thược hồ.
4. Hư nhi bất khuất, động chi dũ xuất.
5. Đa ngôn số cùng, bất như thủ trung.
Dịch xuôi:
1. Trời đất không có lòng nhân, coi bách tính như chó rơm.
2. Thánh nhân không có lòng nhân, coi bách tính như chó rơm.
3. Khoảng trời đất giống như ống bễ. Trống không mà không hao kiệt, càng động, hơi càng ra.
4. Nói nhiều cũng chẳng hết, thà giữ lấy Trung.

Đất trời chẳng có lòng nhân,
Mà xem vạn vật in tầm chó rơm.
Thánh nhân chẳng có lòng nhân,
Mà xem bách tính in tầm chó rơm.
Kiền khôn mở đóng khôn lường,
Trống nhưng mãi mãi là nguồn hóa sinh.
Thà rằng ôm ấp Đạo mình,
Còn hơn vất vả thuyết minh suốt đời.

Heaven and Earth are not humane
Heaven and Earth are not humane,
And regard the people as straw dogs.
The sage is not humane,
And regards all things as straw dogs.
The space between Heaven and Earth is just like a bellows:
Empty it, it is not exhausted.
Squeeze it and more comes out.
Investigating it with a lot of talk
Is not like holding to the center.

WITHOUT INTENTION
Nature acts without intent, so cannot be describedas acting with benevolence, nor malevolence to any thing.
In this respect, the Tao is just the same, though in reality it should be saidthat nature follows the rule of Tao.
Therefore, even when he seems to act in manner kind or benevolent, the sage is not acting with such intent, for in conscious matters such as these, he is amoral and indifferent.
The sage retains tranquility, and is not by speech or thought disturbed, and even less by action which is contrived. His actions are spontaneous, as are his deeds towards his fellow men.
By this means he is empty of desire, and his energy is not drained from him.
