Hán văn:
絕 聖 棄 智, 民 利 百 倍. 絕 仁 棄 義, 民 復 孝 慈. 絕 巧 棄 利, 盜 賊 無 有. 此 三 者 以 為 文, 不 足. 故 令 有 所 屬. 見 素 抱 朴. 少 思 寡 欲.

Phiên âm:

1. Tuyệt thánh khí trí, dân lợi bách bội.
2. Tuyệt nhân khí nghĩa, dân phục hiếu từ.
3. Tuyệt xảo khí lợi, đạo tặc vô hữu.
4. Thử tam giả dĩ vi văn, bất túc.
5. Cố lệnh hữu sở thuộc. Kiến tố bão phác. Thiểu tư quả dục.

Dịch xuôi:

1. Dứt thánh bỏ trí, dân lợi gấp trăm.
2. Dứt thân bỏ nghĩa dân lại thảo lành.
3. Dứt khéo, bỏ lợi, không có trộm cướp.
4. Ba điều đó hào nhoáng bên ngoài, chẳng đủ vào đâu.
5. Phải chú trọng điều này: Giữ vẹn tinh anh, chất phác: ít riêng tây, ít ham muốn.

Dứt bỏ thánh, khinh thường tiểu trí,
Trong dân gian, lợi sẽ gấp trăm.
Tung hê, nhân, nghĩa, chẳng cần,
Tự nhiên dân sẽ mười phân hiếu từ,

Dứt khéo léo cùng là tài lợi,
Dân theo gương bỏ thói gian tham.
Ra chi phù phiếm vẻ văn,
Cốt sao nắm giữ được phần tinh hoa.

Hiển dương Đạo, sống cho phác thiệt,
Ít đam mê và ít riêng tây.

Get rid of “holiness” 

Get rid of “holiness” and abandon “wisdom” and the people will benefit a hundredfold.
Get rid of “humaneness” and abandon “rightness” and the people will return to filial piety and compassion.
Get rid of cleverness and abandon profit, and thieves and gangsters will not exist.
Since the above three are merely words, they are not sufficient.
Therefore there must be something to include them all.
See the origin and keep the non-differentiated state.
Lessen selfishness and decrease desire.

RETURNING TO NATURALNESS

It is better merely to live one's life, realizing one's potential, rather than wishing for sanctification.
He who lives in filial piety and love has no need of ethical teaching.
When cunning and profit are renounced, stealing and fraud will disappear. But ethics and kindness, and even wisdom, are insufficient in themselves.
Better by far to see the simplicityof raw silk's beautyand the uncarved block; to be one with onself, and with one's brother. It is better by far to be one with the Tao, developing selflessness, tempering desire, removing the wish, but being compassionate.
